what do you do when the weather isn't perfect for photography - some suggestions are made of subjects and techniques to employ when the light is dull or when the sun shines too brightly.
A Talk by Ann Miles
Photographic club meeting on 7th March 2011
Ann Miles came to us from cambridgeshire and delivered a very interesting and informative speech on photographing in different weather conditions she displayed many of her photographs some of which were local to her area and some from her travels abroad mainly to the colder climates
please take a look at her website to see some of the great photographs she has taken of many subjects, not just the weather

Club Practical night
Tuesday 22nd February
Painting with Light
Tonight we had another of our practical nights, this time entitled “Painting with Light”. It gave us all a chance to explore our creative side taking pictures using long exposures in dark conditions.
Everybody arrived with different types of light sources including a mixture of torches and laser pointers and interesting objects to photograph. Bob and I had also brought along some equipment to create patterns using different methods to suspend light sources, mine very much in a Heath Robinson way.
After a period of setting up and a chance to get the customary drink all the lights were turned off and the chaos began.
Maybe the combination of darkness and many thousands of pounds worth of precious photographic equipment wasn’t the best combination however, everything seemed to proceed without too much of a hitch. As far as I know only one glass of beer was tipped over and no damage was done to anybody’s equipment.
All in all it was another enjoyable evening and hopefully many images were taken and they will be posted in the gallery.

My Way with Prints
Monday 7th February
This week we had a presentation entitled “My Way with Prints” by Mike and Viv Woolnough from Colchester Photographic Society. Mike has been a keen photographer with 50 years experience encompassing both film and digital photography.
Viv began the talk by presenting a show and tell of some of her favorite pictures that she has taken. As she explained this was only her second time presenting a talk on her prints, however the quality of her images and her talk were very good. Her photos covered a range of subjects from landscapes to abstract and many of her images were taken in her local vicinity of Tiptree and the surrounding coastline such as Tollesbury and Maldon.
Mike then took centre stage and began with original prints he had taken in 1970’s London. These were very interesting and gave an insight into the way the London has changed over 40 years. It was also interesting to see photos printed from film compared to digital prints.
We had a mid talk interval for refreshments and when this was over the newly engraved trophies were awarded for the Open Competition held at our last meeting.
Norman took first, second and third place in the advanced section with three brilliant pictures, they were certainly worthy winners. We will all have to raise our game next time to compete with him.
First place in the novice section was taken by Colin with Joe receiving second and third. These were also terrific pictures and worthy winners. Hopefully the winning entries will be posted in the gallery.
Then it was straight back to Mike with the remainder of his prints until the end of an enjoyable evening. Mikes last batch were digital images and varied from candid street shots to landscapes.
Our next meeting is a practical night entitled “Painting with Light” and should be lots of fun and a chance to get creative.
I dont have all of the winning photos but i do have one and that is Colin Springall's photo of a dragonfly who received first prize in the Novice section
Well done colin
